Is it stupid to wear a suit to prom???

I can't afford to rent a tuxedo and all I have is a suit and I've been told that it's stupid to wear suits to prom...I'd go in my jeans and my Fender shirt if I could but I'd get kicked out OPPINIONS PLEASE!!!
