How do I start a compost pile?

I would like to start a compost pile, and know the basic how to's, but I'm just wondering how to get it really going. Is there anything that will jump start the whole process or an accelerant or some kind? Should I buy some worms? Also, I'm kind of concerned about how to keep out critters. Any suggestions?
