10 month old not attempting to stand on his own.?

I have a beautiful bright 10 month old. He is a little chatter box and is already starting to say a few words (mama, stop, and duck). I'm just a little concerned because he refuses to pull himself up and stand (even while holding on to something) He is my first and only and I'm sure if this is normal and I have to admitt that I do kind of compare him to my nephew who was up and walking around at 10 months. Whenever I try to put him up on his feet he holds his legs out in front of him and becomes very stubborn.
